Elon Musk has confirmed NBCUniversal executive Linda Yaccarino has been appointed as the CEO of Twitter – and hinted the platform will be rebranded as ‘X, the everything app’.
Musk made the announcement on Friday morning with a tweet which said: ‘Looking forward to working with Linda to transform this platform into X, the everything app.’
He said Yaccarino ‘will focus primarily on business operations, while I focus on product design & new technology’.
Yaccarino had resigned as NBC’s head of advertising earlier in the day – following growing speculation she’d be chosen for the Twitter role.Musk said in December that he’d step down as CEO once he’d to replace him.
Her appointment comes after she interviewed Musk at a marketing event in April and boasted about her ‘work ethic’ – a meeting which some have speculated may have played an important role in her appointment.

Her resignation from NBCUniversal was announced in a statement which said she had left the role of Chairman of Global Advertising and Partnerships with immediate effect.
Yaccarino said: ‘It has been an absolute honor to be part of Comcast NBCUniversal and lead the most incredible team.We’ve transformed our company and the entire industry—and I am so proud of what we’ve accomplished together.’
The appointment at Twitter confirms of the platform.
Yaccarino interviewed Musk at a marketing event on April 18 and began by telling the audience: ‘Many of you in this room know me and you know I pride myself of my work ethic, but buddy, I met my match.’
Observers speculated the interview may have played an important role in Yaccarino’s appointment to the Twitter job.
She also spoke positively about Musk’s ‘push for democratization’ at Twitter during the the POSSIBLE marketing conference in Miami.
During the conversation, Musk also elaborated on his vision to turn Twitter into X, the everything app.
‘Twitter is effectively an accelerant to an idea I’ve had for a long time…X, the everything app,’ he said. He described it as a ‘platform that is so useful that you find it is essential to conduct your life’.

The string of developments on Friday come after Musk announced a day earlier that a new CEO for Twitter had been appointed to start in six weeks.
He tweeted: ‘Excited to announce that I’ve hired a new CEO for X/Twitter.She will be starting in ~6 weeks!
‘My role will transition to being exec chair & CTO, overseeing product, software & sysops.’
Yaccarino is a ten-year veteran of NBCUniversal and is widely-respected for her work in reshaping strategies around gauging the success of campaigns.She also played a leading role in the launch of the ad-supported Peacock streaming service.
